Even during warfare, the Christmas spirit carried on. The nights got longer, and the temperatures lower, but still soldiers and families kept their hearts warm with the spirit and good cheer of the season. Regiments continued to hold celebrations, even keeping the tradition of a hearty Christmas dinner. Heartfelt letters and postcards were exchanged, although sometimes the messages were cloaked in political statements. Some desperately wanted their families reunited at home for Christmas, but others were more ecstatic for their military service.

The festive season brought a range of sentiments during WW1, and the unique, personal testimonies of those who experienced them are now waiting to be read and transcribed here.

The Christmas Run takes place from Tuesday 13 December 2016 to Sunday 15 January 2017.
