took over 100 prisoners and ten machine guns.

He afterwards consolidated his position and  established a

new trench line. Later in the afternoon the Germans

made a determined effort to recapture their lost ground

but the company stood firm, and successfully resisted

every attempt to dislodge them.

That night, the enemy ventured a surprise attack under

cover of the darkness , but the men, whom Lt O'Kelly had

placed in advance posts in front if our line, were ready for

them, and the threatened attack ended in a rout.

Several prisoners including one officer, and a machine gun were

left in our hands.

Throughout the day Lt O'Kelly had been always where the

danger was greatest encouraging the weary, cheering the

wounded, and inspiring every man of his company with the

will to conquer. Under such a leader his men were willing to

go anywhere and do anything.
