machine gun Fire so we were getting a

little more used to seeing Casualtys now

and we had not been in the line yet one

man caught a Stray Bullet in the Stomach

and several more in the legs Capt Blighty's

anyway we were beginning to wonder when we

would eventually reach the Front line

or whether any of us would be left to

reach it as we still plodded on we came

accross Some Fellows standing in these

trenches on little Platforms allo we

must be getting Pretty near it now as

these fellows were on Sentry go and

we  were getting very Excited like a lot

of Kids getting to the end of a long

train ride gong to a Treat and we

were Laughing and Joking and sending

some comical messages back when

one Fellow shouted keep Quiet you

B--Fools this is the Front Line and

Fritz is only 50 yds away at this Point

Ho I said that is awfully annoying

the London Scottish were holding this

Part of the line then with the Regular

or what was Left of them and they

were a fine lot of Fellows as we were

the First Division of Terriers to go

out there these Regulars were the

Last of the Old Contemtables Poor

Devils we thought what a terrible time

they had had before we got out there

to releive them a little they looked

terrible smothered in mud from head

to Foot no wash or Shave for weeks
