My Own Darling,

  The post arrived early to-day

& I was very pleased to get your

letter numbered 39. Last night when I

went to bed there was a sharp frost

but when I woke this morning I saw

it was snowing slightly; by the time

I got out of bed that had changed

to rain and it has poured with rain

all the morning. Our tactical scheme

was first of all postponed for half

an hour and then put off for another

day. At the same time I was ordered

to attend a lecture on "Cookery" at

a place four miles away. It was so

wet that I went in the Mess Cart.

I learned how to make pastry & pie crust

&c. with 1 lb. of biscuit meal, 3 oz. of

dripping & a pinch of salt &c. &

got back again in time for lunch.

It was very cold riding but the hood
