string. Another was a chemist's assistant

& also a talker - not quite such a good worker

but when the tasks are pointed out he does

them. When he can find or see the work

that is to be done he will be more useful.

The third is a young boy full of knowledge

derived from books and other people's

conversation but of practically no experience.

He has never gone in for athletics or in fact

any branch of sports & games. He makes sweeping

statements oftimes very inaccurate - for instance

he said this morning "Religion is a substitute

for education." "I wish I had gone in for

sports I think they are very good but of

course I don't mean things like horse

racing." "It's fine being a soldier in England

but I don't think much of being out here."

It would amuse you to hear some of our

talks. I don't claim to have a very wide

knowledge of the world but my experiences

would cover all that these three have

known & then lap over. Seeing I am in

command I suppose it is only right that

I should know more than the others but

I hope the next officer I get won't

have been brought up in quite so

cramped a sphere. My men are keeping

wonderfully fit, I haven't had a

man "go sick" for days. This tour is

also the best rest they have had

in spite of working parties and they

are in better form now than I have

seen them since I came back to the
