My Own Darling Wife,

  There was no English mail

for us yesterday so there was

nothing for me. To-day is a

lovely October day and so far the

Boche has been fairly quiet. Perhaps

he will wake up a little late. We

had a pretty little "air scrap" overhead

this morning when one of our

artillery busses took on four

Boche machines. He didn't get

them down but he sent one

home in a hurry and the

other three sheered off. I am

very fit & well & having rather

a slack time. Perhaps I'll get

more to do in that three days

at Grantham but there will be

compensations then. It will be

lovely to be with you again after

this long long absence. So lovely

that it is almost impossible to

believe that leave will shortly

be due & that I shall be

able to set out to meet you.

I think there will be one or

two things I shall want to do

in London. If so do you think
