My Darling,

  Once again I write from

a strange place - a room in a Belgian

Cottage with unpainted woodwork, walls

of rough bricks & mud floor. On one

side are three windows overlooking

the fields but the view is limited

by the trees in every direction.

I have exchanged my luxurious

bed for a comfy wire bed

in a tent - so I am one

stage nearer to the war

again. I was called at

some unearthly hour this

morning for I had washed

shaved dressed & had

my breakfast before four

am. By five the battalion

had gone & I stayed

behind to see that

everything was properly
