My Own Beloved Marion,

  I couldn't let my

birthday pass without writing to

you could I? Ta for your

letter of the 27th received just

as I was setting off on my

rounds last night about 11 pm.

My birthday started with a

great amount of noise for

while I was in the front line

the Boche became inquisitive

& we had to teach him that

a certain spot was not good

for his health. I got back

to my dug out soon after

dawn & had a great sleep. This

morning I had a visit from the

major & this afternoon the C.O.

- still acting Brig - came round

accompanied by Knox who

has recovered. They brought

a bottle of port to drink my health.
