My Own Darling Wife,

  We have had a real hot day

to-day - strong sun & practically no breeze.

I spent the early hours of this morning until

2 am with the C.O. drawing up a musketry

course for us to fire when we go out of the 

line - usual rest you see. Ta very much

for the cake you sent. It was very 

kind of Jo to think of me & to make

one for Daddy as well as Kenneth. Tell 

Kenneth that I enjoyed the cake very 

much. We had it for tea this afternoon

in the dug out. I found Jo's letter

under the cake & could just

manage to read it. One of my subs

departed on special leave this 

morning. He had a wire about a 

week ago to say his father was

seriously ill & his leave came through 

last night. Shortly after this there was a
