men were feeling rather tired this

morning + suggested to one of their

NCO's that they had been working

all night + would like to rest a little

longer.  "Rest" he said "why you always

rest in the Army when there is

absolutely nothing else to do". It is a

curious thing that every Battalion in

the army thinks that it is the only

one that works + always says that

the people who held the trenches before

them didn't do a scrap of work.  It may

be true, but I know that we have put

pretty good drain into this line built

about a dozen new dug outs - put firing

steps &c into the posts we hold, made

rifle racks, new latrines &c to say nothing

about the work done in other parts of the

line by our working parties.  The other
