reading the Grantham Journal, smoking

+ watching the beetles. There are a large

number of these round my "summer seat"

Some of them fly in to say "How do"

while other crawl quickly out of the

grass + as quickly disappear. A few

just pop their heads round a blade

of grass, nod + disappear. The

cock chaffer is clumsy + drops down

through the leaves + branches when

he forgets his weight, or miscalculates

a distance. There are quite a number

of birds about whistling as hard as

they can go + taking no notice of

the noise of the guns or the planes

overhead. On the other side of the

wood I hardly saw any but this

was perhaps because there were too

many men about. I can just see

the Hindenburg Line by looking
