KYRENIA,

6.3.16.

Hon. Chief Secretary,

As instructed I proceeded to Kyrenia and

took the following statements:

1. The statement of the Chief collector

of Customs.

2. The statement of the Commissioner.

3. The statement of the five persons

forming the crew of the "Evangelistria"

when the vessel sailed from Kyrenia.

2. I was assisted in my enquiry by the Chief

Collector of Customs, and, if I may venture to say

so, from the manner in which the sailor gave their

evidence we came to the conclusion that they were

not the class of persons who could undertake the

work of supplying submarines with petroleum with

success, and also that in fact they had not done so.

3. I have inspected olive refuse similar to

that sent in the "Evangelistria" to Rhodes and a

sample of soap similar to that which was on board.

The Chief Collector of Customs and I are inclined

to think that the smell left by the refuse and the

smell of the soap, together with the smell of the

lamps and of the paraffin which appears likely to

have been recently applied to the rustry firearm

found in the hold, may have caused the French sailors

to think that a considerable quantity of paraffin

had recently been on board.
