There was an extraordinary fat Commander of the Guard at

Schornhorst.  It was always an amusement when his guard

came on duty.  The walk I do not know how far the

guard marched was about enough for him.  He arrived

hot & tired [insert]and bothered[/insert].  One day sitting outside the Guard Room

he dropped his half smoked cigar.  It was a physical

impossibility for him to pick it up.  This he realized.

So he called one of the Guard to pick it up for him,

and continued  his smoke.  [insert in different ink]This sounds and old chestnut but it

was true[/insert].  At the bottom however he was not a bad sort, and would

send the guard to pick up balls which had got beyond

our boundries [SIC] - which was more than other Commanders

of the Guard would do.

... Bottom half of the page contains a drawing in colour of a fat Commander of the Guard, signed PHL
