Sergt D Hendine 2nd Batt RSF Wounded on the Lys Canal

on the Night of    ...    20th of Oct 1918

[next page]

                 Close of Day

The glorious purple mountains lie around me calm and still

In the solemn hush of evening the peace of God's good will

Above me o'er the bracken, the curfews wheeling cry

As the shadows creep and lengthen soon the golden day must die

With gurgling rush and tumble in graceful frolic's zest

The brooklets murmur croodles the gentle sheep to rest.

In yonder dell it glideth o'er the face of boulders grey

And a slender birch stoops lowly to woo its gem-flecked spray.

Fragrance of gorse and heather, of pine, and hearths of peat,

And many a dewy hay-field are wafted to my feet.

The distant hills grow misty as ^the lengthening shadows fall

O're the river in the valley, and the Church mid pine trees talk
