August 2, 1914, when the morning
papers brought us the details
of the declaration of war, I
was in Mt Pleasant. After
learning that the worst had
come to pass, that war had been
declared which I did not
believe possible, I met on the
street a stranger, one of the
common people, I should
call him, who said to me
"What's the news?" and when I
told him, he said with an
oath "I hope they'll make
it so bloody that there'll never
be another war." The
King of Spain, however, says
that after the war the nations
will increase their armaments
more than ever. We are told
on the one hand that the European
