excessive speed - then you come to yourself and realize

that you are really out FREE for the afternoon and it

is like the first circle of a heaven through which you

mount for the next few hours. Thats what happened

to me yesterday! We cleared the town, got on to a

high country road running parallel with the Bosphorous

and towards the Black Sea: on our right moorland with

real heather and blue chicory. + glimpses of a dazzling

blue Bosphorous- and beyond it on the other side, the

coast of Asia Minor sloping up, sparsely covered with

houses + trees; + to the left more + more moorland

barer hills sloping down to a wide strath + to the great

Belgrade forest like an open strath in Scotland or

some of the Sussex downs, only more wooded. Colours quite

indescribable ranging from browns to purples into pale

turquoise in the far off distance where hills began to

rise again to the west; on the nearer slopes lay great

masses of cloud shadows amethyst verging on rose

colour one minute, amethyst deepening into rich

sapphire blue the next. Never did the world look

more lovely, or the narrow opening into the Black Sea

more romantic or full of suggestion. It is always a

place that thrills me, that opening through cliffs to a

sea beyond - in much the same way as does a winding

road that disappears over a hill - may lead anywhere,

to any adventure, only the  paths of the sea are a thousand

times more wonderful & mysterious -

Coming back, there was the pale ghost of a new moon
