28th Oct.

Parcel mail came in. Nothing for me, letter expected tomorrow. Fine day

awfully close. Enemy shelled beach and valley very much- fear a good many

casualties- our camp not shelled - rumors of us going to trenches on

Sunday next.

29th Oct.

Fine day but dull although it's warm. Received from home- Parcel- 2

bundles of papers and letter. Answered letter home also sent Lizzie copy of

statement etc. of event of 13th August. Asked her to send in P1934 for Nov,

onwards. Received letter from Rice and Troughton. Guns at it rather hot

today. Not one shell came over from Turks today.

30th Oct.

Sent Lizzie 2 parcels and short letter (underclothing etc.) Had hot bath

enjoyed it grand. Packed kit for move tomorrow.

31st Oct. Sunday.

Has most busy day packing stores  and clearing out to relieve Lovats Scouts

in trenches. Armstrong remained in sand storm. Fox  Russell the guide took us

over salt lake - had an anxious time. Divisional guide out us on right

road. Arrived at destination (reserve trenches) unloaded and finished about

3 a.m.

1st Nov.

Busy day getting ready to go to firing line. I got finished work about

midnight. At Perth Station during issue of rations and stores. Bullets were

very thick, mostly very high, still one felt a little uncomfortable. Self

and orderly could not find Battalion H.Q. although we got to the first line

of trenches. Went back to Perth Station and slept there with Gr. and joined

H.Q. at 7 a.m. My kit was looted. Telescope , boots, soap etc. stolen while

I was away at firing line with C.O.

2nd Nov.

Busy day settling up things after the move. Both sides very lively during

day and night. Had decent nights rest. Expecting mail tomorrow. Found

reptile like lizard about 15 inches long. It was alovely colour and

beautifully marked. New system of issuing stores to Coys, adopted.

3rd Nov.

Received 2 letters from L . and one from Shan- dated 7th, 9th and 11th

October. Went twice around firing trenches this morning- had a few shots

at 400, 450, 859 and 1000 yards.Busy day, guns active. Visited Ration Dump

at 9.30 also S.A.A. depot. Lively night.
